I know they used to use crates but that was before my time. It's amazing how they can use a special trailer and scoop up a line of bins in the field and then drop them off in a neat line. Also, I hate it when people think you can just shame the apples off the tree. First off, the apples would be bruised. Secondly, apples that touch the ground can't be used. Why? You don't E. Coli.I grew up in apple country, we used to get paid to pick up drops for cider. I think they probably pasteurized it. But my friends and I used to sit in the trees and make our own cider- we’d pick an apple, and gently bash it around and around and around, without breaking the skin, until the whole thing was soft and then we would suck the juice out like vampires. Also wastes a LOT of apples having apple fights, hiding behind bins and chucking them at each other. Good times. Doesn't that damage the apples? Basically the reason they pick them by hand in the first place? Except that could bruise the apples. Now granted if it’s strictly just for cider it doesn’t matter. However if you’re looking to sell them, then they aren’t as pretty and people kind of dislike buying bruised apples. Super downside...every single apple is now bruised and therefore the shelf life is cut by half at least. They’ll regret that in a week or so, and revert back to hand picking next season.
